Monika
Galvan $4,000 Scholarship, May 2000 to TSTC. Monika Galvan,
a May 2000 Tech Prep Texas Scholar graduate of the Harlingen school district,
ranked 24th in a class of 377 students. Described by her teachers as "willing
to work, goal-oriented, courteous, intelligent, friendly, dependable, compassionate,
mature, responsible, principled, respectful, and refreshing," Galvan received
a $4,000 scholarship to Texas State Technical College, where she is studying dental
hygiene. When competing for her scholarship, Galvan wrote: "As soon as I began
high school, I worked hand in hand with my counselor to figure out some type of
layout for the rest of my high school years. To me, it almost seemed as if at
that point in time, I was not only laying out my high school life, but my life
in the real world . . .. I was very interested when my counselor mentioned some
things known as "career pathways." I thought that this was the key to getting
that head start that my parents always told me to take. I figured that since I
so desperately wanted to enter into the medical field I would take certain courses
that would help me to do just so. I am truly thankful for all the help I have
received from everyone who has encouraged me and I am really glad that I never
stopped reaching for those stars." Galvan serves as a student member of the Tech
Prep Board of Directors and will complete her associate degree in less than two
years.
