May, 2008 Mia Aguilar, a 2008 recipient of the $3,000 Dr. Lauro F. Cavazos Tech Prep UTPA Scholarship was influenced to enter the world of medicine because of a diagnosis of colon cancer in a close family member. She says, “It was medicine that saved his life, and nothing has so greatly inspired me since.”
During high school Mia became a Tech Prep Texas Scholar at Harlingen High School South through taking Health Science and Technology, Medical Terminology and then a concurrent enrollment in Biology at TSTC. After graduation she intends to earn a double major in biology and mathematics and a minor in chemistry under a pre-medical program with the Baylor College of Medicine.
Mia hopes to specialize in pediatric medicine or orthopedic surgery and when her training is complete, to return to the Rio Grande Valley and begin her own clinic.
UPDATE: After two years at UT Pan American, Mia is still maintaining a 4.0 GPA. “I’m working on a double major in Psychology and Biology…with a minor in Chemistry” she says.
Some challenging classes have been biochemistry and animal behavior. She belongs to the Pre Med Honors College and Guerra Honors Program where the classes she takes carry specialized programs of study. “I also volunteer at Valley Baptist Medical Center”, Mia says.
After graduation she will continue her education at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
