Crystal Ann Vasquez, a May 2003 graduate of Johnny G. Economedes High School, Edinburg CISD, received a $3,000 scholarship to the University of Texas-Pan American. Interested in medical studies, a variety of health-related courses during her high school career. Although several of her high school classes could be transferred for credit to a two-year college through Tech Prep articulation, Vasquez elected to waive the articulated credits and to enter a four-year university. In her application, Vasquez stated, “I chose a four-year university because no one in my family has attended a four-year university and I wanted to be the first to do it. Although these credits will be waived, the courses have shown me a lot of what the medical field is about. I have gained much useful knowledge that is very important.” Vasquez plans to major in Nursing at UTPA in the fall.
