July, 2003 Christina Acevedo, a May 2002 graduate of Nikki Rowe High School, McAllen Independent School District, received a $5,000 scholarship and entered the University of Texas at Austin in the fall. In her application, Acevedo stated that she had been preparing for a medical career her entire time at high school. She purposely selected the most challenging academic courses and levels offered with an emphasis in mathematics. She also pursued Tech Prep courses such as Health science Technology to increase her skills in general medical terminology of the Health Science pathway. Acevedo’s high school courses in Health Science Technology allowed her to obtain a license as a Certified Nurse Assistant while she was in high school. Acevedo is currently a mathematics and pre-med major at the University of Texas at Austin.
