February, 2004 Cynthia Hernandez, Academic Shared Advisor, La Joya ISD, is considered a “true professional who lives by the challenge to humanity of Abraham Lincoln.” She has demonstrated the skills that are trademarks of an effective counselor, including being organized, motivated, effective in planning major projects, ability to work independently, and able to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Hernandez strives to prepare her students for the real world of work by coordinating preparatory school-to-work activities for 1,500 eight graders in her district. Her determination and hard work have helped to increase the number of Texas Scholars and Distinguished Academic Program graduates. She is a crucial contributor in the coordination of the high school and post-secondary preparatory activities including preparing numerous presentations for parents and students and coordinating post-secondary tours to local colleges, as well as job shadowing opportunities, career clubs, and career business tours.
