Tech Prep intern Chris Pompa seated in the station control room has been mentored by Channel 4 staff including Olga Valdez and Mauro Escamilla.
Two interns, Chris Pompa and Edlin Valde Monica Ortiz, HR manager at KGBT-TV Action 4 News, has hosted Tech Prep students on job shadowing days and summer interns before. That’s why the television station was willing to take on two Tech Prep interns for 20 hours a week recently.
“We like to familiarize future broadcasters with the field and give them hands-on training. Not many people understand the full range of opportunities and challenges in the business,” Monica said. Two La Feria High School Tech Prep students, Chris Pompa and Edlin Valdez, spent eight weeks at the television station where the staff helped them to explore those opportunities and map their futures. Edlin was interested in the news aspect, reporting and producing. Chris, with a background in general science and computers, homed in on producing and directing, staying behind the scenes.
What they’re used to at school is far from what they encountered at Channel 4, Monica explained. That’s why she and the staff took time to help them grasp the general concepts. “Now they are going beyond the basics.”
Working in different areas of the station convinced Chris that he wants to stay behind the scenes directing and producing. “Everyone here is so helpful. They make it easy to learn,” he said. Chris has gained confidence in his ability to learn and take responsibility. He hopes to work part-time at the station during the school year.
Tech Prep intern Chris Pompa spent the summer behind the scences at KGBT-TV learning about the many different facets of television production.
